Black Girl in Five Acts

Black Girl in Five Acts
By Taonga Sendama. FringeWorld. The Kaos Room, The Blue Room Theatre, Perth Cultural Centre, WA Jan 22-25, 2026

Black Girl in Five Acts has just finished its short run, in the intimate space of the Kaos Room at The Blue Room.

Cosy in this former classroom, with the audience placed on two sides, solo performer Taonga Sendama had her audience captivated throughout her show, which ran short of its advertised 45 minutes. The set of rug and scattered books - mostly black and or feminist writers, sets us up for a cerebral yet gentle experience.

Taonga, a Zambian born Perth girl talks about growing up as a black girl in Perth. Essentially a blend between long form poetry and dramatic monologue, Taonga looks beautiful in her white dress, but it is her earnest and honest writing and beautiful heartfelt delivery that has the audience engrossed. Her work tells of grief and growth, tenderness and triumph, inheritance and the emergence of individuality in this blank verse expression of feelings and ideas.

A beautiful blend of created and recorded sound provides an organic accompaniment to the spoken word and silences. A thoughtful creation from Isabella Nguyen.

Raw but warm and uplifting, this was a pleasure to experience.
