Following a number of one person shows from Black Swan in the past few years, notably Every Brilliant Thing, RGB – Of Many, One and Prima Facie, comes another excellent solo production. A new play from Australian actor and playwright Thomas Weatherall, this is heartfelt, moving and topical, and deals with sensitive and tragic issues while allowing optimism and moments of humor.
A young man enters the space, soberly and formally dressed, with a black tie, and we assume that he has come from a funeral. The space is filled with rostra of oddly geometrical shapes, used as various pieces of furniture, and two rotating glass panels - used to great effect. Cleverly conceived by set and costume designer Cherish Marrington, this is a versatile and beautiful space, that is used in surprising and clever ways. Bold lighting choices from designer Matthew Erren allow for great intimacy and Jarred Wall has provided supportive composition and sound design.
The stark design, while standing out in moments of surprise - allows actor Owen Hasluck to shine. As character Mark tells of the loss of his twin brother, the abandonment by his father, his precarious mental health, breakdown and a suicide attempt, we are drawn into his world by a deep, beautifully structured and intelligent performance. Offstage characters become very real, and the direct address to the audience feels natural and spontaneous.
While the subject matter feels daunting, and this is a story of great loss, Hasluck’s beautiful delivery and honest performance, makes this a joy to watch. Well worth seeing.
