Cinderella With A Twist

Cinderella With A Twist
By Yvette Wall/ Directed by Jane Sherwood. Roxy Lane Theatre, Maylands, WA. Nov 28 - Dec 13, 2025

As Panto season continues, Roxy Lane Theatre’s Cinderella With A Twist would be my pick of the Community Theatre Pantos for this year. Directed with understanding by Jane Sherwood, this theoretically "non-traditional” pantomime has a good sense of pantomime traditions and works its audience well.

The cast is led by 19-year-old Zion Amsha in the title role. A sassy, independent and rational Principal Girl who sings well, they anchor the show with panache. My only disappointment, and it’s a personal preference, is that Zion’s stunning dark curls were hidden by a blonde wig. Zion also acted as Musical Director and Choreographer for the show. The Principal Boy, Handsome Price Dreamy, was played by (real boy) Kieran Smith with charm, fabulous hair and lovely swagger.

There is nothing like a dame, and this play has two of them, in the form of Cinderella’s Stepsisters. Kevin Winder looks and sounds like David Walliams in drag, excellent as Monsters, while a bearded Clayton van Dijk brings energy to sister Groteska. Evil Stepmother is played with relish and quick wit by Candice Preston (too young but we don't care). Candice showcases some of the best of the costuming (by Celeste Lopez and Jane Sherwood) sporting a new fabulous outfit with every appearance.

In smaller roles, Sarah Thilagaratnam shot diversity both as the Fairy Godmother and Kimmy K, Ana Fernandez is efficient as valet Canterbury, Siobhan Fowler is solid as Stella Starlet and Lis Hoffman gender flips to play the despicable Sylvan Bowel. Sarah Christiner embraces the very physical role of Savage the Cat.

Lots of young people in this one, playing age-appropriate roles and doing it very well. Three Blind Mice are played with enthusiasm by Nina Duris (making a Community Theatre debut), Zac M and Danuka M (both making stage debuts). Talent School Students and the Three Little Pigs are played with style by Lisy Risinger, Alice Kosovich and Alix Archibald.

Good family entertainment, that had both children and adults laughing.
