Disney Frozen Kids

Disney Frozen Kids
Music and Lyrics by Kristen Anderson Lopez and Robert Lopez, book by Jennifer Lee. Scripted Drama. Directed by Sian Wake. Pinjarra Civic Centre, WA. June 24, 2023

I was fortunate to catch the very short season of Scripted Drama’s production of Disney’s Frozen Kids. Featuring a huge enthusiastic cast of young people aged 7 to 14, this was a show with high production values, lots of enthusiasm and joy of performing.

This cut down version of Frozen condenses the famous story, largely with the help of a team of storytellers. Scripted’s version featured the talent and teamwork of Eveii Coles, Ava Westley, Emma Rob, Lamika Koroheke, and Holly Thorburn.

With minimal but high-quality properties, and beautiful animated projections, the story opens with young Elsa and young Anna, played with panache by Milla Boutle and Maya Heke. They morph into middle Elsa and middle Anna, given lots of personality by Sienna Balding and Ruby Collard, until eventually we meet our leading ladies, Anna, played with passion and fun by Tasha Mitchinson, and Elsa, given dignity and elegance by Bethanny Clark.

Kristoff, unlikely hero-of-sorts, is played with great charm by Luke Willman, nicely supported by his reindeer companion Sven, sweetly played by Hunor Kamras.

Love interest and secret villain Hans is played with lovely swagger by Xavier Ollife, while the pompous Duke of Wesselton is well played by Alexander Mains.

Anna and Elsa's parents are presented with beautiful dignity and maturity by Eveii Coles and Zephaniah Challender, while Lois Newman as Pappie and Csenge Kamras as Bulda adorably lead a tribe of cute forest folk.

Wonderful work from a large ensemble, who have excellent focus and perform Sian Wake’s choreography with gusto and precision. They were led by lead dancers Myra Parker, Ella Braithwaite, Hannah Carrington-Cotton, and Lexi Carrington-Cotton.

Dramatic lighting by Lori Anders and Rp van der Westhuizen, and very effective costuming coordinated by Sian Wake, helped the production to reach its full potential, and sound by Matthew Wake and Riley McGuire supported strong developing voices.

Lovely to see a high-quality production from this young company and the capacity audience had a ball.
