The Dixie Swim Club

The Dixie Swim Club
By Jessie Jones and Jamie Wooten. Tugun Theatre Co. Gold Coast. Director: Chris Hawkins. November 12th – 28th, 2020

The girls of the Dixie Swim Team: Sheree – Pamela Payne, Lexie – Tracy Carrol, Dinah - Judy Newman, Vernadette – Anne Westmorland and Jeri Neal – Gai Byrne, hold a reunion every year in a seaside bungalow at The Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Since swimming in the team, the girls have all gone their separate ways but the annual reunion is sacred to each of them.

Chris Hawkins’ vision for the production includes an eye for detail and a great cast to carry this, his first production, off.

Of special note is the film of the sand dunes outside the window - we see the wind blowing the dune grasses and bushes and in Act 2, the pouring rain and in the last scene we see four of the girls setting off to spread the ashes of the late Dinah in the sea.

The costumes really defined the character of each of the ladies from their various backgrounds, and though the years have passed between each of the reunions the audience is privy to, it’s very easy to follow the continuing saga that is the longevity of their friendship.

Due to Covid restrictions, the audience numbers have been limited which is a shame because this show should be seen by everyone.
