DOMINANCE and Submission

Standing in line to watch DOMINANCE and Submission, I could help but notice the diversity of the audience. Younger, older, they were all there, including a pup and his Master. I knew it was going to be an experience to remember.

The mood is definitely buzzing as I sit down and take in my surroundings; candles circling the stage area, a red leather coach, a bondage cross and long lengths of chains hanging tantalizingly in the centre.

Watching us silently is a girl in red bondage outfit and mask holding an apple as if to dare us to take a bite and enter her world - a world of bondage, submission and control.

From rope play and seductive body movements, to instances of inflicting pain that of course also contain pleasure, there is much to take in within DOMINANCE and Submission.

Most impressive was the use of aerial chains, more fitting to the theme of the night than silks. They also add a degree of difficulty to the act in that chain is more slippery and certainly less flexible to grip with the body.

One of the most interesting aspects of the show is the Shibari demonstration (a form of rope bondage originating in Japan) as ropes are carefully, but strongly, tied in patterns encasing a body in intricate detail and with speed that is impressive to the novice. What we witnessed seemed initially easy to the uninitiated, however there are hours of practice to ensure the knots are equally easy to undo. The end result is dramatic, uncomfortable and applause-worthy, as aerial suspension takes bondage to the next level. However, I was disappointed not see the red ropes of traditional Shibari.

You will see real pain in this show, and see and hear the real reactions to it.

Full marks to the talented rigger (who applies the bondage) and his willing submissive (who enjoys being bound). This is a very personal experience of trust between the two.

One of the highlights of the evening was the aerial pole routine which culminated in a ‘death drop’ skilfully executed.
