The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds by Paul Zindel

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds by Paul Zindel
Director: Jane Sherwood. Phoenix Theatre, Phoenix Theatre Memorial Hall, Hamilton Hill, WA. June 24 -July 3

This was my first trip to see Phoenix at their home in Spearwood, which is rather remiss of me. This was a lovely performance in a charming venue. This is the first drama they have produced in a nicely revamped theatre.
Paul Zindel's characters reside in a cluttered and untidy home, which was nicely designed by director Jane Sherwood. While the prop dressing was excellent, the stairs, necessarily narrow, felt a little incomplete and unsafe without railings, and it was a pity that there was no change to the mess during the show. Otherwise this show was well produced; a nicely paced show that was well performed.
The daughters in this disturbed Hundorfer family, Ruth and Tilly, were played by Carmen Miles and Melissa Kiiveri, who were convincing sisters and gave thoughtful, well measured performances. Both very difficult roles, these were impressive performances, especially given that Melissa is only fifteen and Carmen was obviously unwell.
The role of Beatrice, their mother, is an exceptionally challenging role and a lot to ask of a much younger woman in her first major role. Cally Zany gave this role an excellent attempt and I would love to see her play it again in fifteen or so years time.
The support roles were nicely handled by Kat Duynstee, who delivered a lovely single speech cameo, and senior actor Barbara Good who played Nanny. Nanny was a silent character, but one who was very important and Barbara delivered a bravura performance.
Special mention must be made of animal performer Sammy Giancola as Peter. He is a beautifully controlled and behaved rabbit who was relaxed and comfortable on stage.
This is a very solid production of a Pulitzer Prize winning script, with some beautiful roles for women and a lovely message. It deserves to be seen by a much bigger audience.
