Everything Is A Lie

Everything Is A Lie
Lauren Edwards. The Butterfly Club, Melbourne. 16 to 21 May, 2022

If you’re longing for something to do in Melbourne this week, fear not, Lauren Edwards is here to save you from post-Comedy Festival withdrawals, as well as your own unrealistic hopes and dreams. In her latest show, Everything Is A Lie, Edwards shares how, after another year of lockdowns, health issues, environmental and political crises, she’s given up, and you probably should too.

This show is a masterpiece of millennial misery. Edwards reflects on life as a thirty-something, with all its disappointments from incompetent (at best) politicians to still waiting for her big break in showbiz even after decades of hard work.

Edwards keeps the audience enthralled from the moment she bounces onto the stage in a Golden Girls t-shirt and on-trend sneakers (orthotics of course because she has back issues #relatable). She covers everything from climate change anxiety to the absurdity of gratitude journaling, with enough attitude to make even the most serious of Instagram influencers laugh-out-loud. Be warned – Edwards is not afraid to pick on audience members!

The show’s entertainment value is bumped up another notch with catchy original songs that Edwards wrote herself. Edwards delights the audience with her powerful and perfectly pitched voice, peppering each song with moments of honesty and sarcasm to keep the laughs going.

Everything Is A Lie is a slick, fast paced show that has the audience in stitches from start to finish. Even non-millennials will be highly amused by Edwards’ witty, rapid-fire jokes that juxtapose contemporary issues and ambitions with frank reality checks. Edwards is down-to-earth, brutally self-aware and extremely talented. Go see for yourself!
