Exit Laughing

Exit Laughing
By Paul Elliott. Wanneroo Repertory. Directed by Andrew Covey and Karen Tropiano. The Limelight Theatre, Wanneroo, WA. Feb 12-28, 2026

Wanneroo Repertory’s opening show for 2026 is the black comedy Exit Laughing. Nicely polished and well performed, this was a positive way to open the year.

While we have seen Exit Laughing in Perth before, this is the first time we have seen it firmly set in its original setting of Birmingham, Alabama, a choice which really works better with the style of dialogue and the addressing of people as Miss So and So. Unfortunately, the director or designer has decided to dominate the set, an otherwise beautiful rendering of Connie’s suburban home, with a large portrait of President Donald J. Trump. I think that this was a mistake, as the use of such a polarizing public figure could bias the audience against Miss Connie, or indeed against the play itself. I find it difficult to look at this person for this length of time, and I am sure that others must feel the same.

This is otherwise a good-looking show. Peter Giles’ lighting is supportive and well done. Costuming, in the hands of Shelley McGinn and Richard Covey is well chosen and the show sounds good thanks to a sound design by Reynold Bauer.

The cast are a very likable group. Performing her first play in Australia, and a very welcome addition, Bella Freeman is lovely as householder Connie, working particularly well with Naomi Ottley, convincing as daughter Rachel. Ann Speicher is excellent as the outspoken Leona, while Colleen Hopkins is delightful as ditzy Millie, bringing back memories of her sister Kerry in the same role. Outsider Bobby, who arrives as a gift from deceased friend Mary - (he is a stripper), was played by Garrison Cox, using his natural Southern accent. Garrison appeared in the same role in the sequel to this play, at Old Mill in 2025.

A warm feel-good show, where the cast are working hard and hitting all the marks. Good fun to watch.
