GATSBY at The Green Light

GATSBY at The Green Light
Presented by Sydney Opera House and Caper & Crow. Director and Co-Creator, Craig Ilott. Designer and Co-Creator, Stuart Couzens. Music Director: Kim Moyes. Studio, Sydney Opera House. 13 December 2025 – 28 March 2026

Immerse yourself in a decadent world of burlesque and adults only circus. Taking the stairs down to the lower level of the Studio at the Opera House, it’s easy to imagine you’re stepping into a subterranean 1920s bar inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. For many audience members it’s a genuinely immersive experience, seated at tables around a sweeping bar, served by lively engaging wait staff, soon to transform into the production’s splendidly choreographed (Lucas Newland), top notch ensemble.

Yes, regular summer audiences have visited many a bar or club in this venue over recent years, but this one is unique, redolent at first glance of Gatsby and the 1920s.

From the outset, the music is very now, while the cabaret, burlesque and circus specialties combine to create an ambience which mixes of present and past. Initially the performances feel like pure entertainment, pure (or not so pure) and simple, though Jay Gatsby hovers in the shadows of another of party.

Ebullient hostess Bettie Bombshell ensures the evening rolls along. Florian Brooks transforms from barman to juggling barman, to juggler extraordinaire. Odette provides rich, soulful vocals. Tommy Egan, with style and elan, relishes tap dancing up a storm. Aerial acts from Oscar Kaufmann, with a flying hatstand, then Miranda Menzies’ feats while dangling by her hair, dazzle. And that's just the start of their talents and surprises. All are amazing, versatile artistes.

So far, it feels a lot like the relatively plot-free formula of so many other enjoyable recent summer seasons in this venue, yet there’s a difference this time around, in director Craig Ilott’s splendid decadent entertainment. There’s a far stronger narrative, culminating in a stunningly entangled, passionate aerial love sequence between Mariia Borysiak (Daisy) and Jacob McPherson (Gatsby), justaposed with Spencer Craig’s entirely darker solo aerial passage afterwards as the older Gatsby.

Matt Marshall's Lighting Design is stunning throughout, and when its combined with the fabulous aerial acts, true magic happens.

GATSBY at The Green Light is such a striking, sexy, contemporary spin on one of the 20th Century’s classic literary love stories, told by a cast of extraordinary performers.

Prudes definitely won't enjoy this show, but, like me, I think just about everyone else will love it.
