Hello, Asteroid

Hello, Asteroid
By Hamish Pickering. Fringe World. Directed by Jefferson Nguyen. The Studio, Subiaco Arts Centre, WA. Jan 19-22, 2022

Hello, Asteroid is an apocalyptic one-man show written and performed by Hamish Pickering. A likeable and charming performer, Hamish works his audience well, with some songs that are very hummable and nicely performed.

Lots of ring-of-truth detail from Hamish in this story about a young man (Hamish) awaiting imminent death from an asteroid that is about to destroy the earth. Hamish has such a matter-of-fact delivery, and the details are so complete, that you begin to wonder if the whole story is true and that you have missed the news stories about an impending asteroid strike.

Hamish addresses the audience directly, while there is some low-key audience participation and some songs about life, love and meaning including the title song “Hello, Asteroid”. The story is nicely structured, and despite the knowledge that this is never going to end well, it is strangely uplifting.

Would not be at all surprised to see this return to the stage. When it does, do yourself a favour and grab a ticket. This black musical comedy is a bitter-sweet joy to watch.
