unBALANCED Productions managed to get two performances of their wacky comedy Help! There’s a Yugoslavian in My Fridge, before being shut-down by the current Perth lockdown. A very unlikely little tale, but it keeps its audience interested throughout.

Armchair detective Marty has convinced himself that his very elderly neighbour Morris is a Yugoslavian spy and decides to prove this by stealing a priceless diamond from Morris’ letterbox. Marty and housemate Glen are suddenly embroiled in a world of undercover agents, criminal subterfuge, secret tunnels and fake presents.

Moon-boot wearing Max Gipson (whose real-life injured foot is cleverly and subtly absorbed into the plot), is excellent as the slightly unhinged Marty, nicely paired with a gloriously over-the-top Christian Dichera as the flamboyantly costumed Glen. Lots of larger than life support from Cait Griffiths as the mysterious and sexy spy Cora (very Bond villain), Travis Koch as the intriguing Quinn and Alex Hutchings ageing up to play Morris.

Lots of attention to detail and some surprises in this set, and some well chosen costuming. The show features special effects by Tiahna McBride and is stage managed by Keely Maloney.

Fun “university style” humour, with the energy and weird turns of the classic British Footlights graduates. Nicely directed, well performed and easy to watch.

Hopefully this really likeable little piece of craziness will get the opportunity for further performances beyond this interrupted run.
