Homer’s Odyssey

Homer’s Odyssey
A mini musical From Iliad to Odyssey with songs and spoken word by Loucas Loizou. Melbourne Fringe Festival. 12 - 29 November 2020.

In this unique adaptation Odysseus is an old man living in Ithaca who spends his time singing and telling stories. Among his tales are the Trojan war, the Cyclops, the underworld, Circe, the suitors, and Penelope. The performance treats the audience as people who gather at his house to listen to him reminisce about his adventures. This gives the show a perfect structure and rationale and, combined with a cavernous setting and simple costuming, gives the show a very authentic feel.

Cat Stevens gave Loizou his first job singing in his family's restaurant and this is not inconsequential as his singing and storytelling style has a very soothing approach, not unlike the famous singer and songwriter. His smooth and unwavering voice is beautifully accompanied by exquisite guitar playing. Loizou is no stranger to bringing Greek mythology to life in a genuine and accessible manner and has staged many original adaptations of this rich culture. The songs are mainly original compositions but also include traditional and popular songs. The performance has wonderful anecdotal details that bring the stories to life in a truly engrossing manner and Loizou easily captivates his audience.

The show is clearly conceptualised as live and the static camera for the online delivery does not do the performance justice. While the space is ideal for its aesthetics and acoustics as well as the intimacy with the audience, these qualities are not all successfully conveyed via the camera. The lack of close ups of Loizou’s delicate expressiveness and his intricate guitar playing are conspicuous.

The highly effective first-person narrative is the most fundamental aspect of the success of the show. This allows the audience to feel as though they are truly in the thick of the action that Lizou so beautifully conveys with pathos, energy, humour and raw emotion.
