Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar
Music by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Lyrics by Tim Rice. Director and choreography Maureen Bowra. Lynch and Paterson production. Twelfth Night Theatre. Brisbane July 9 – 18, 2021

This 1970 rock opera only appeared on the Broadway stage because of the success of a concept album that had been released earlier. Basically, the musical is sung through and is loosely – very loosely – based on the final week of the life of Jesus as told in the Gospels. The concentration is on political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The interpretation of that history as shown in this musical upset so many people and it is easy to see why.

Director Maureen Bowra has combined a large cast in various lead roles to a large ensemble very successfully. The freedom of movement was somewhat restricted as the large orchestra took over so much of the stage. Still the combination of predominantly male voices and great musical accompaniment carried the tempo of rock so well.

Simon Chamberlain, suitably dressed in white, was very good in the role of Jesus with a good voice and dramatic acting of the role. His good performance was   vital to the overall success of the rock opera. Jesse Ainsworth was a dominating Judas, both in voice and size. The contrast in appearance of the actors enhanced the contrast of the characters. The costuming matched the various supporters with the anti Jesus group all dressed in black and his wavering supporters, disciples, in multi shades. The others in the team interacted well. A minor fault for me was when the spotlight shone right in my eyes - and sometimes the music was too strong.

This was back in the days of rock, an eternity ago, and it was a great journey from this musical team. Go back to the good old days for music of that era.  Well done indeed by all involved.
