JUDY
“There’s a little of Judy Garland in all of us” the advertising suggests – and this bright, cleverly conceived cabaret of the songs made famous by “Miss Showbusiness Herself” proves it is so! Six talented performers accompanied by equally talented musicians Andy Freeborn, Alec Steedman and Austin Hall showcase “the magic and humour of a legend” in this 60-minute program that is totally entertaining.
The program of more than 30 songs is a kaleidoscope of her work – accentuating the variety of repertoire as well as her sense of humour … and how much she was loved. Like Garland herself it is upbeat, a little sassy and a little nostalgic.
Jack Dawson, Prudence Holloway, Kira Leiva, Sebastian Nelson, Addy Robertson and Madeleine take Garland to Vaudeville and Hollywood, from moments of fun to moments of nostalgia. Together – and in solos – they cover the wide range of Garland’s work, as well as highlighting their own talents.
The program is skilfully organised and choreographed, each item running seamlessly into the next. The only props are six stools which are at one time cunningly arranged as a piano! The performers work beautifully together – encouraging, supporting, harmonising, accentuating little moments of humour – and never missing a beat … or a note.
The program weaves its way through 30 years of Judy Garland’s life in the spotlight of movies, musicals and the concert stage. Songs like “No Business Like Show Business”, “Always Chasing Rainbows” and a cutely arranged medley form “The Wizard of Oz take their place alongside “A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow” (from Little Nelly Kelly 1940!) to “The Trolley Song”, “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries” and “Happy Days are Here Again”.
It is fitting that the program also includes Andy Freeborn playing and singing “Quiet Please, There’s a Lady on the Stage” – Peter Allen’s tribute to someone who was a special part of his life.
JUDY is a brilliantly conceived and beautifully performed tribute to the woman who made her mark so vibrantly on the world.
