London Calling
London Calling is a joyous whirlwind of cabaret, circus, magic and comedy that lives up to its ‘Pick of the Fringe’ reputation. Over a fluid and thoroughly entertaining 60-minutes this British-themed variety spectacular delivers laughter, skill and spectacle in equal measure.
A magician with comedic panache hosted the show with charm and a sharp wit making London Calling feel like a guided tour through a wonderfully madcap London night out. This set the tone from the outset, effortlessly blending audience interaction, magic and comic flair.
The variety of the performers within this production showcased a breathtaking range of talents with stand-out moments that included seriously accomplished juggling sequences where precision, skill and sheer inventiveness kept the audience glued to every toss and catch. Juggling suitcases and even juggling a ‘Londoner’ (albeit a mannequin) was most impressive. Witnessing some of the fastest and most extraordinarily confident juggling I have ever seen from a second juggling act, this feat was complemented by the fact that the clubs being throw with incredible accuracy lit up in the most amazing display of changing colours, creating a striking visual spectacle. The aerial and hula hoop segments of the production were both graceful and thrilling to watch and the clever magic that was weaved throughout the show contained delightful twists that genuinely surprising onlookers.

A seemingly simple shadow puppet section of the entertainment set to the music of the ‘Circle of Life’ became an incredibly unexpected hypnotic highlight. A humble, yet visually creative artform that delivered an impactful and most enjoyable punch. Such a joy to watch!
The show’s lighting design and British-flavoured soundtrack, which aptly included The Clash’s London Calling, complemented the performance beautifully, creating an atmosphere that felt both nostalgic and fresh. With only five performers, London Calling feels far bigger than its modest cast size which is testament to the performer’s charisma and collective talent. Packed full of variety, clever surprises and unabashed fun, London Calling is an event for the whole family – this production is definitely worth 60 minutes of your time to be thoroughly and marvellously entertained!
