Mates
Rodmusic Productions present the World Premiere of Mates, a World War II Musical “about Love, Mateship and War”. Based on the story of Rod Christian’s parents and friends, this small cast musical is touching and sentimental, and the story is sensitively told and beautifully sung by a talented cast.
Hannah Anderson is gorgeous in the central role of Yvonne, based on the author’s mother, a beautifully sung and intricately layered performance that anchored the musical beautifully. Her two suitors were also expertly portrayed and made believable best friends. Keelan Thompson was earnest and forthright as Ron, while Mark Retzlaff brought larrikin charm and courage to best mate Bret.
Darren Goodison and Michael Sheehy brought warmth and gravitas to the young men’s fathers. Megan Kelly was delightful as Joan and with Melissa Gall as Betty, part of an impressive trio with the leading lady. Deanna Robillard brought compassion to stepmother Jean. Strong support from Glenda Prideaux, Josie McAllister and Rex Gray in smaller roles.
A composite set, appropriate period furnishings and projections by Paul Christian and Mediavation help to create multiple locales and a a plethora of era accurate costumes by Merri Ford, help establish place and time, with atmospheric lighting design from Kaelan Marinescu.
Performing to a mix of recorded and live music (played by Rod Christian in his role as Musical Director), the singing sounds great. The songs are a mix of contemporary and “of the era” sound, and while the occasional lyric feels a little forced, the overall score is excellent.
Fabulous to close the year with a top quality new musical that was a joy to watch. This show deserves its full houses, and perhaps, being a sell-out, we may see another run in the future.
