Mendoza Tango Quintet
This superb performance by Mendoza Tango Quintet showcases sassy, fiery tales creatively woven through music and song. Mutual lovers of Argentinian music, dance and wine, the quintet's name Mendoza is inspired by the largest wine-producing region in Latin America.
These talented Australian-based musicians share their passion and love of traditional Argentinian tango music in an enchanting and evocative style that you want to surrender to from the first note. Close your eyes and be taken on a wild and spicy journey from the elegant dance halls to the underground tango clubs of Buenos Aires.
The music itself is a masterclass in elegance, transporting listeners to the heart of Argentine tango. It is clear that, while the quintet is accustomed to playing for dancers, they relish the opportunity to perform for a seated audience and create a special connection. They actively engage with their audience, sharing charming anecdotes about falling in love with tango, creating a layer of intimacy and eliciting warm laughter and applause.
Together, violinist Liz Young, and pianist Thomas McCorquodale beautifully showcase their technical skills. Thomas provides exceptional timing and rhythmic drive, while bandoneón player, Stephen Cuttriss, performs with joy and a sense of fun that effortlessly draws you in. Complementing these instrumental gifts, talented and sassy singer Solange Lipcin commands the stage with a presence of strength, showcasing the playful use of her voice that perfectly suits the tango's dynamic nature. Completing the quintet, Chloe Ann Williamson performs wonderfully on the double bass, showcasing her passion for tango and the depth of her skills.
The intimate atmosphere of The Events Centre, Caloundra Playhouse stage setting made it easy to focus, drawing the audience fully into the small scene. A particular visual delight was the golden dress worn by the violinist, a captivating shimmer under the stage lights that seemed to dance with every bow stroke. Throughout the performance, the quintet not only played beautifully but also honoured iconic composers, enriching the audience's understanding. A short interval allowed ample time to discuss the performance and share insights gained over a quick refreshment.
The Mendoza Tango Quintet offers a seamless and elegant performance. You can sense and enjoy that these talented musicians are equally at home performing concerts of nuevo tango music as they are playing golden age tango classics. Don’t miss this show!
