Motherhood the Musical

Motherhood the Musical
By Sue Fabisch. Murray Music and Drama. Directed by Tammy Peckover. Pinjarra Civic Centre, WA. Nov 13-28, 2020

Murray Music and Drama’s Motherhood the Musical is another ‘replacement show’, as in the wake of Covid, the decision was made to downsize from a planned production of Happy Days to this fun, easy to stage four hander.

Tammy Peckover directs a likeable cast of women in this funny, fresh and occasionally very touching cabaret style show. While this could almost be staged on a bare stage, we are given a fully realised set, well constructed by Andy Peckover and Rowan Creelman, with costumes chosen well for characters and a full lighting plot (operated by Terry Peckover), to create a good looking production.

The ladies are a believable group of friends, with nicely realised characters, some strong singing under the direction of a coincidentally pregnant Siân Dhu and some quirky choreography, including some work with shopping trolleys kindly lent by Coles Pinjarra, by Christina Treg.

Courtney Loffler plays catalyst character Amy, whose baby shower sparks a flood of reflection and advice from her friends. Jacky Creelman gives a powerhouse voice and a load of personality to newly divorced Tasha. Christina Fahll is elegant as lawyer mum Brooke with Gemma Little nicely cynical as stay-at-home mother Barb.

Originally written for an American setting, this translates well for a Western Australian audiences - especially now we finally have a Costco (even if it is a considerable drive from Pinjarra).

Good fun and a pleasant afternoon or evening out, Motherhood the Musical is an ideal way to spend time with your mummy friends or your own mum,
