Mzaza

Mzaza
Written by Pauline Maudy. Produced by Greta Kelly and Pauline Maudy. Directed by Benjamin Knapton. Presented by Human Symphony. Powerhouse Theatre. 6 February, 2021

Multi-award-winning world musicians Mzaza packed the Powerhouse Theatre for a live rendition of their acclaimed album The Birth and Death of Stars. Enthusiastic music lovers enjoyed the passion, intelligence and musicality of the sextet, performed against a surreal digital set by Finnish animator Laura Matikainen.

The group were giving the show their all, but with the relaxed confidence you get when you know you have a tight and well-rehearsed set. Poetic spoken word pieces were delivered by vocalist Pauline Maudy between each track. These represented some of the only English language sections of the show, with most of the song lyrics performed in French.

The show explored themes of connection, the universe, philosophy and biology. Music drew influences from the band’s rich multicultural heritage. While Mzaza was born from Brisbane’s music scene more than 15 years ago, the musicians that make up the group come from all corners of the world.

Greta Kelly shone on violin, and shah kaman. Pauline Maudy’s connection to the lyrics made for an emotionally rich experience. Malindi Morris percussive skills were impressive across darabuka, cajon, bendir, and cymbals. Ricardo Bona’s dexterity on the accordion was exciting. Guitarist John Robertson brought spirit to his work and Goran Gajic provided the music’s soul via the double bass.

While the audience had been asked to avoid shouting out during the show, people were so moved they couldn’t help themselves. Mzaza’s commitment and love for their work was palpable, inspiring the same passion in return from the appreciative crowd.
