Next to Normal

Next to Normal
By Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. James Terry Collective. Chapel Off Chapel. 18 to 27 March 2022

Enter the home of the Goodman family. What might seem like a happy suburban family setting soon reveals some dark secrets. The show takes us on a compelling journey as we slowly get to know each characters’ deepest hopes and fears. Each character, we learn, is trying to make and maintain connections to each other, loved ones lost and their true selves. Their tragic story unravels incrementally, keeping the audience engaged and bringing them to tears at multiple junctions.

The formidable cast brings authenticity to each of their unique characters. Queenie van de Zandt is unmissable as Diana Goodman; her powerful performance displays her vocal strength and emotional breadth in all their glory. Matt Hetherington brings the perfect balance of determination and desperation to Dan Goodman. Melanie Bird was also outstanding as frustrated, hurt teenager Natalie Goodman; definitely one to watch. Hanlon Innocent as Natalie’s boyfriend Henry is delightfully love-sick and dedicated to Natalie, bringing a lot of hope and humour to the show. Sam Richardson as Gabe Goodman carries out his complex role with great skill and compassion. Ross Chisari pulls off some highly entertaining moments as Dr Madden/Dr Fine, the medical professionals who traverse the line between antagonist and protagonist.

The rock score and adept lyrics are another highlight. The talented cast of six executes the complex harmonies with gusto, making it sound like there are many more voices. They're backed by an equally impressive band. This show would not have been out of place in a larger venue, but Chapel off Chapel provides an intimacy that seems appropriate for this deeply personal story. The set creates a dynamic environment for the cast to move in.

Next to Normal is an example of the more mature musical canon coming out of the United States in the last few decades. Such musicals (Come From Away and Fun Home come to mind) tackle traumatic subject matter by harnessing the power of song to depict an array of complex emotions and perspectives. The show's serious themes are portrayed with sensibility and plenty of wit and surprise. Bring your tissues!
