The Nirvana Unplugged Experience

The Nirvana Unplugged Experience
Nick Deegan and Band. The Garage International @ Dom Polski. Adelaide Fringe 2026. February 21st - March 20th, 2026

MTV officially launched their unplugged series in 1989. Artists from all musical genres were asked to perform a stripped back set of songs of their choosing for 60 minutes. No feedback from imposing amps or deafening audio coming from speakers, just an intimate hour of music. It is an understatement to say that it was a success. The series clocked up millions of views as well as huge record sales.

Adelaide artists Nick Deegan, Ed Mitchell, Jeremy Owen and band, have recreated Nirvana Unplugged, Nirvana’s 1993 performance in New York. A dimly lit performance space is adorned with white lilies and black candelabras holding black tapered candles. It gives a calming ambience. The audience is seated within close proximity to ensure an intimate experience.

If you are familiar with the 1993 performance, then you will immediately notice the details that emulate the original session. Positioning of the band, the red, white and blue guitar, accompanying cellist, and the famous green cardigan worn by lead singer, Kurt Cobain. Deegan even has that nonchalance displayed by Cobain in this performance.

The set list is a mixture of originals and covers. Opening with “About a Girl”, you immediately recognise the gravelly tone of Cobain’s voice. Deegan does an incredible job of capturing the texture and restraint that added such raw emotion to Cobain’s vocal. I was mesmerised listening to classics such as “Come as you Are”, “Pennyroyal Tea”, “ Polly” and “All Apologies”. With a 14-song setlist full of highlights, it was “How Did You Sleep Last Night”, originally by the band Lead Belly, that packed an emotional punch.

It is impossible to fault this performance; from the staging to the sound quality and presentation, it was immaculate. Nick and his bandmates captured the charm and intimacy of the original iconic performance. A standing ovation on the night I attended was well deserved.
