The Book of Mormon

Book, Music and Lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. Jones Theatrical Group. Capitol Theatre Sydney. Opening Night - July 24, 2025

With their elbows pointed sharply up, the crisp young new group of Mormons carved up the stage of the Capitol Theatre making  the musical  feel fresh and just as shocking as we first remembered it.

The tuneful ding-dong sound of the doorbells of the opening song “Hello” is soothing,  as the recruits innocently rehearse for their missionary positions (double entrende intended) with precision and camp sensibility.

Ravel 150

OQ Studio Series presented by Kawai. Voxalis Opera associated with Opera Queensland. Griffith University Conservatorium, Brisbane. 25-26 July, 2025

Being a Ravel fan, I was interested to review this intimate concert presented in a delightful setting with tables, chairs and flickering candles, subtle lighting along with views of bubbling wine glasses and plates of culinary delights.

It graciously set the mood for an afternoon of sophistication a la Francoise, celebrating the 150th anniversary of renowned French composer Maurice Ravel's birth along with various composers connected to his lifelong experiences and artistic growth, and all complete with an on-screen translation.

Sylvia

By A.R. Gurney. Wyong Drama Group. Red Tree Theatre, Tuggerah, NSW. July 25 – August 2, 2025

Sylvia has bounded on to the stage at the Red Tree Theatre with a scratch, a sniff and a leg hump.  Wyong Drama Group have done it again with this energetic production that centres on a married couple and their unexpected addition in the form of a homeless dog.

The Royal Organist

Queensland Symphony Orchestra Maestro series. QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane. 26-27 July, 2025

James O’Donnell, Conductor, Organist and Teacher, previously Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey and now Professor of Organ and Sacred Music at Yale University amongst other musical activities as an international performer was guest artist this last weekend performing a relatively unknown work with a fascinating history by Belgian composer Joseph Jongen along with Saint-Saens classic Organ Symphony. Unfortunately I missed the performance of Bach’s famous Toccato and Fugue in D minor as it was only included in the concert the following day.

Coriolanus

By William Shakespeare. Bell Shakespeare. Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne. 24 July – 10 August 2025

At the magnetic centre of this Coriolanus is Hazem Shammas’ riveting performance of the title character.  He is surrounded by other subtle, intriguing and beautifully judged performances, but it’s Shammas who holds it all together.  When we see him harshly lit, bare-chested, and drenched in blood, we believe this is a fearsome, stop-at-nothing, force of nature warrior.  But he is, as well by turns, impossibly proud, contemptuous, vain, humble, embarrassed, sly, funny, even endearing, and dangerously vulnerable.  Coriolanus is at bottom a soldier, and

Moonlite

Music by Wally Gunn and libretto by Maria Zajkowski. Presented by Homophonic! and The Consort of Melbourne, Directed by Miranda Hill and Steven Hodgson. Fitzroy Town Hall, 201 Napier St, Fitzroy, Melbourne. 26 July, then 23 August (Shepparton), 31 August (Ballarat) & 11 October 2025 (Port Fairy).

Patricia Di Risio and Susanne Dahn review Moonlite.

Moonlite is described as a true-crime queer love story of the 19th-century Australian bushranger Andrew George Scott. It takes the form of an epic oratorio which involves voices, percussion and viola. The lyrics of the award-winning composition are not an ordinary narration. The story is told via poetic imagery of the period, the emotions and the events. It recounts the story of the star-crossed lovers with the Victorian Gold-rush-era as the backdrop.

The Forgotten Songbook

Writer/ Musical Director/Producer: Emerson Hurley. Producer/Writer: Dylan McBurney. Director: Mikey Halcrow. Chapel off Chapel, 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran. 25 – 27 July 2025

Musical Theatre is based on confabulations and conceits wrapped up in glamour, a good tune, snappy lyrics and elegant dances. The creators of The Forgotten Songbook have taken the challenge of inventing within this genre head on, and have created layers of narrative, snappy and soulful songs with lovely tunes and engaging choreography.

The Importance of Being Earnest, a Trivial Comedy for Serious People

By Oscar Wilde. CGTC (Camberwell Grammarians Theatre Company). July 24 - 26

The Importance of Being Earnest is arguably the most well-known of Oscar Wilde’s plays. Comedic in tone, it takes to task the absurdities of the British upper class. The dialogue requires rapid-fire delivery by eccentric characters.
