Runt

Runt
By Patricia Cornelius. Presented and co-created by Dee & Cornelius & Wilks. Directed by Susie Dee. fortyfivedownstairs, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne. 24 February – 7 March 2021.

This is an impeccable production with a clear and cohesive approach across a variety of elements in the play. Runt has a lyrical and poetic style that is also infused with confronting everyday language. This makes the text hard-hitting and compelling. The play is a combination of musing, laments, hard truths and uncomfortable accounts of what it is like to eke out an existence from the margins of society. Runt brings the hardships of those who experience poverty, discrimination and abuse to the forefront and exposes the often callous and unjust motivations for their exclusion from society.

The perspective could have easily been dark and demoralising, but the play is vigorous and enlightening. This is undoubtedly due to Nicci Wilks’s highly energetic performance. Wilks, much like the character she portrays, is minute in stature. However, her vigour creates a fierce stage presence and allows her to command the space in an unquestionable manner.

The simplicity of the set enhances the overall effect of the play. The circular design reiterates the vicious cycle that Runt depicts and allows attention to be solely focused on the performer. Wilks is always acutely aware of this and meets the arduous demands of the role without hesitation. The evocative lighting and sound effects also help to bring forth the variety of difficult emotions explored in this piece; rage, frustration, determination and shrewd resourcefulness are among the complex and intense sentiments depicted in this play.

This is a spectacular production which is as striking as it is raw. The magnificent delivery of this text creates a unique ability to effectively draw audience members into what is usually perceived as an alien world and a completely foreign psyche.
