Siegfried in Concert

Siegfried in Concert
Melbourne Opera presents part three of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle: Siegfried. Directed by Suzanne Chaundy and conducted by Anthony Negus. Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, 31 Sturt St, Southbank. Sunday 25 September 2022.

The concert production of Siegfried is an absolute treat. This major opera is full of intense drama and explores themes such as hunger for power and world domination. These themes are fully indulged as each character’s lust for power becomes a destructive or fiery force in their lives.

The very fierce and vigorous music highlights these themes, and the fervour of the compositions are beautifully captured in this performance. The majesty of a 90-piece orchestra on the stage is also a feast for the eye and the performance is exquisite. The singing is glorious with strong vocal and emotional performances from each cast member.

Robert McFarlane provides a very animated Mime and Bradley Daley conveyed all the cold and calculated aspects of Siegfried. Simon Meadows as Alberich and Warwick Fyfe as The Wanderer provide outstanding performances. Their wonderfully powerful voices perfectly express the incredible grandeur inherent in the story and the music.

Steven Gallop as Fafner creates a very pompous dragon while the delicate and melodic tones provided by Rebecca Rashleigh as Woodbird and Deborah Humble as Erda create a delightful contrast to the imperious atmosphere that dominates this opera. Lee Abrahmsen is exceptional as Brunhhilde. Her voice is full of deep sentiment, and she portrays the awakening of her character with naturalness as well as passion.

Melbourne Opera is well poised to present its Ring Cycle Cultural Festival season in Bendigo in 2023. A regional Australian first, each Ring Cycle will be offered over two weekends at the Ulumbarra Theatre. The productions will feature some of the performers from Siegfried in Concert and both Chaundy and Negus will be at the helm of what promises to be a magnificent festival: https://www.melbourneopera.com/project/bendigo-ring-cycle/
