A Song at Twilight

A Song at Twilight
By Noël Coward. Old Mill Theatre, South Perth, WA. Mar 13-28, 2026

The curtains open on the Old Mill Theatre’s A Song at Twilight to reveal a stunningly beautiful set, that sets the standard for this Noël Coward classic.

The action in this play runs essentially in real time, over the course of a single evening in a luxurious lake-side Swiss Hotel, within the regular suite of Hugh Latimer and his wife Hilde. When an old flame of Hugo’s comes to meet him for dinner in his suite, what could possibly go wrong?

Bittersweet comedy, the bulk of the action is between celebrated author Sir Hugh Latimer, played with depth and care by Neale Paterson, and former lover Carlotta Gray, played with sophistication and care by Emily Howe. Jennifer van den Hoek is believable as Hugh’s wife Hilde, with Jack Riches having fun, and blushing on cue as handsome and efficient hotel butler Felix.

Lots of thought has gone into this well-structured play which deals with memory and blackmail, forbidden love and comfort in relationships.

A beautiful looking production, the gorgeous set was designed by George Boyd, and exquisitely decorated by Barry and Julie Gordin. Mark Nicholson has provided a lovely lighting plot, with Merri Ford designing the costumes - Carlotta’s dress is beautiful and her hair is lovely.

Another popular show, with well-deserved sold- out matinees. You should still be able to find tickets for evening performances - and will not be disappointed.
