Soweto Gospel Choir

Soweto Gospel Choir
Presented by Andrew Kay. Adelaide Fringe. The Peacock at Gluttony - Rymill Park. Feb 24 – Mar 2, 2026.

Soweto Gospel Choir capture the soul, joy and transcendent spirit that creates an unforgettable performance.

From the moment the Choir stepped onto The Peacock stage at the Adelaide Festival Fringe, it felt as though a beacon of pure joy had descended into the space…not just to perform, but to share something so special that seemed to have its origins in the depths of the performer’s souls. This isn’t a choir that sings for applause or merely to entertain; they sing as if each lyric is a lifeline to hope and each harmony a gift to the heart. Their performance radiated a profound, contagious happiness that swept through the audience from first note to final bow. This was truly a rare experience!

Over the course of a mesmerizing 55-minute set, the Choir brought an energy and spiritual warmth that felt far too fleeting. It was as if, just as we were beginning to understand the full depth of their brilliance, it was already time to say goodbye; the time simply wasn’t long enough. A highlight was their rendition of Hallelujah, which was nothing short of transcendent; a goosebump, heart swelling, indescribable and spiritually chilling moment that seemed to settle deep within the audience. Words feel insufficient to capture the emotion of the moment.

Drawing from their South African roots and the powerful narratives of freedom songs, the Choir blends multi-lingual vocals, soul-stirring harmonies, and uplifting rhythms into a tapestry that speaks directly to our shared humanity. Even if the audience doesn’t understand every word that is sung, the feeling conveyed through their vocals and uplifting movement still resonates deeply. Soweto Gospel Choir’s music becomes a universal language of joy, hope, resilience and unity that doesn’t just fill the air, it also fills the heart.

This was all accompanied by an exceptional percussionist who drove the rhythms with his use of Afrikan drums, cymbals and even a Latin American Cajon which was combined with a keyboardist who played with feel and mastery making the heartbeat and soulful energy fill the space.

If happiness, joy, and sheer, unbridled celebration had a definition in the dictionary, the Soweto Gospel Choir should be it. This is not merely a concert, it is a radiant affirmation of life that reawakens your faith in the power of music to uplift, heal, and bring people together. It is impossible to leave after experiencing this event without your spirits lifted, a huge smile and a feeling that your soul has just been recharged – do not miss the opportunity to fill your heart with joy.  Bravo Soweto Gospel Choir – Bravo!
