Tales from the Jetty

Tales from the Jetty
Writers: Bruce Shearer, Alison Knight, Adele Shelley, Gregory Vines. Melbourne Writers’ Theatre. Gasworks Arts Park. Director: Elizabeth Walley. 4th - 15th May 2022

After lockdowns and community disruptions, this wonderful collection of tales about the strength of community when people are committed to a cause is balm for the soul. Four small stories cover-the battle for Wilson’s Promontory’s protection in the late 1880s, the impact of a group of people who volunteer to support people with disabilities to exercise, how a group of mothers combined their efforts to provide resources to other mothers while also reducing waste, and the birth of the Pride March in Melbourne. Each tale has its own distinct flavour and contributes to a rich expression of community.

The strong, flexible ensemble capably enacts a variety of characters ranging from Naturalists from the late 1880s to bureaucrats attempting to protect the Premier from ‘radicals’ wanting to celebrate the LGBTI+ community in a Pride March. A variety of styles is employed ranging from the comic “Model of a Modern Major General” to realistic depictions of frustration, anxiety and hope.

The seven actors, and Monica Wong as herself, are supported by thoughtful costuming and sound and lighting design.

Pathos, frustration and hope contribute to a generally hopeful tone. It would not be surprising if the positivity of the whole work results in more visits to Wilson’s Promontory and more volunteers venturing into their communities.

In its own way, this piece of theatre is its own contribution to the well-being of our community.
