Uncovered

Uncovered
Directed and choreographed by Dave Coombs. Gasworks Arts Park, 21 Graham Street, Albert Park. 27–30 January, 2016

The intensely physical aspect of dance, movement, acrobatics and circus acts frequently carry a simmering undercurrent of alternative sexuality and desire. Rather than relying on innuendo or allusion to explore this aspect, Uncovered is tantalisingly open and provocative in its unabashed emphasis on homosexuality.

The eminently edgy Emily Gare (MC, dance, trapeze, whips) sets a tone that challenges the audience to examine their attitudes and responses to explicit displays of alternative sexuality. Safe words, whips, S&M costumes and simulated sex make this performance extremely daring and visceral. This sensational production is designed to go well beyond simply thematically linking the various magnificent physical feats.

Alex Jeans (aerial silks) literally dances in mid-air with movements that are perfectly attuned to the musical accompaniment. Mark Graham (handstands, aerial hoop), Dave Coombs (Roue Cyr) and Nelson Smyles (clown, hoop diving) provide equally spectacular performances and together they all indulge in a celebration of same sex desire. The acrobatics exude a raunchy sensuality that is sometimes crude but also often touching and romantic. The love-struck clown gives a particularly poignant display of the beguiling effect of sexual attraction.

Dance and stylised movement are also very cleverly used to mock the power dynamics imbued in sexual encounters. This show demonstrates an unexpected sensibility to the mysterious and unpredictable ways in which our bodies are ruled by passionate emotions elicited by love, lust and the irresistible demands of a whimsical and unbridled libido.
