A Wake To Remember
A Wake to Remember uses a reunion at a wake of two remaining members of band to tell a nuanced coming of age story. At university three somewhat talented musicians form a band. Their commitment to and hopes for the band are very different, as are the various attractions which spring up between band members. At the wake, it becomes clear that it didn’t end well and quite some time has passed.
At the wake, the remaining two band members are confronted with the deceased band member coming back to life enough to challenge past memories and behaviours. A clever use of leather jackets indicates the swapping between the present and the past. As with all good coming of age stories there is acknowledgement of and taking accountability for poor decisions and general resolution of the issues left over from the past.
None of this would be all that special except for Samantha Wong’s songs and music and the musicianship of the live, three-piece band. Julian Smith- Gard (piano), Rosie Breedt (violin), and Samantha Wong (cello), provided the music as only good accompanists can, with sensitivity to the singers and the ability to keep everyone true to the music. The songs provided a rich emotional background with stand-out songs for each of the characters. While none of the actors are stand-out singers they hit the notes, managed their breath and were mostly understandable.
Jackson Cross (Ed), Anita Mei La Terra (Andy) and Teddy Burgess (Mac) worked closely as an ensemble and created the longing, anger and angst of young people starting to live independently. The emotional journey the characters undertake was thoroughly satisfying.
The set design was simple, and a few milk crates did excellent work in several roles. The lighting and sound design fortified the staging effectively.
Everyone in this production showed a very sure touch and it will be a delight to watch as their careers burgeon into success.
