We Belong(ed) Together

We Belong(ed) Together
Written and directed by Sylvia Cornes. Fringe World. The Ellington Jazz Club, Northbridge, WA. Jan 20-21, 2021

Sylvia Cornes could well be crowned Perth’s Queen of the bio-cabaret. While cabarets based on the work of famous singers are plentiful, few give you such an insight into the performers’ lives in the way that Sylvia brings her subjects to life.

Last year Sylvia delighted Fringe audiences with Francoise and Friends (which plays again Jan 28-31), which focuses on Françoise Hardy and the Yè-Yè style. We Belong(ed) Together looks at the Rikki Lee Jones story, telling her life story through beautifully curated, gorgeously performed songs.

Sylvia is a dynamic, loveable performer with an obvious passion for her subjects. The audience at We Belong(ed) Together includes some die-hard Rikki Lee Jones fans, some Sylvia Cornes fans, as well as a number I assume turned up because they liked the poster (it’s gorgeous), like the venue, or played a game of Fringe roulette (a win for them). Regardless of their familiarity, it was clear that the audience were very involved and having a great time. Sylvia connects to her audience, is funny and relaxed and is very informative without being preachy. A chameleon of a voice - she sounds amazing as she sings in the style of Jones.

She’s backed by a fabulous four piece band - Thomas Freeman on guitar, Wayan Biliondana on Bass, Will Britto on keys and Liam Hickey, great on drums.

We Belong(ed) Together is a wonderfully performed show where you will a lovely time, and leave feeling a little smarter. A great choice for fans of Rikki Lee Jones, lovers of good cabaret and those seeking something a little different.
