Winni Wizard and Her Magical Smells
It is fabulous that the Fringe World Festival really caters to all ages and tastes - and this show, playing at the heritage listed Old Mill Theatre, is a fabulous choice for the Primary Set.
This one-wizard show opens unconventionally and continues with multiple surprises throughout, that had the young audience yelling with enthusiasm and bouncing in their seats (which is fine because Old Mill’s steep rake ensures everyone can see).

Winni is the alter-ego of stand-up comedian Lisa Gatenby, and essentially this is what the show is - character driven stand-up for little people, although Winni is kind enough to throw in just enough “fly above the kids’ heads” asides to keep the grown-ups chuckling as well. Winni, who is an inept but lovable wizard, allows the children to be the experts and they adore it - with audience response in spades.
I especially enjoyed Winni’s funny, but never cruel responses to a young audience volunteer who proved less than co-operative or well behaved on stage - kudos for handling a difficult situation well.
Winni Wizard and Her Magical Smells is beautifully structured, expertly performed and Winni feels like an old friend by the end of the performance. A winner for families.
