Writer’s Block

Writer’s Block
By Kellie Silver. Tugun Theatre Company, Gold Coast. Director: David Fraser. 9th - 25th August, 2018.

Kellie Silver is a Gold Coast playwright who first presented this play as a ‘one act’ piece and then developed it into the full length version. This is its second outing on the coast. I have been fortunate to see the metamorphosis of all three productions.

As the title indicates, the plot centres around a middle-aged widow (Kate McNair) who has decided to live out her fantasies in print; the problem is she has done little if any preparation and makes it up as she goes along. Her creative thoughts are portrayed on stage by Adele (Sophie Lawson) and Jake (Rory Impellizzeri) with their constant suggestions of how their roles should be developed. Add to the mix a gentleman from the town  (for whom she has the ‘hots’ - and becomes another character in the plot - David Fraser) and her restless sister (Jay-Louise Clark, staying with her on a temporary basis and is bored with the small town and surroundings) who is a constant distraction.

Director David Fraser made good use of a small revolve to transport the characters in and out of the “story”.

The sound effects of a war (too close for comfort) where used to great effect in separating the past and the present.
