Excelsior Primary School. Directed by Tara Oorjitham. City of Gosnells Don Russell Performing Arts Centre, Thornlie, WA. Sep 24-25, 2025
Excelsior Primary School’s production of Moana Jr. was a delightful large cast production, bursting with energy and enthusiasm. Directed by community theatre favourite Tara Oorjitham, this young cast had a great stage awareness and discipline, but didn't forget to have a great time, a feeling which inspired the audience two also feel great.
It was clear that this production was very much a team effort with two assistant directors, Simone Hall and Kylie Isaia, and no less than 5 choreographers. Student involvement was also clear, with much of the projected background artwork being completed by students, and the fabulous monster masks also created by primary schoolers,
I would love to be able to mention every one of the cast of 44 ,as all of the students showed complete involvement, and strong dedication at all times. Young leading lady Mia, in the title role, was a gorgeous performer with a strong singing voice, who acted with depth and intelligence, anchoring the show beautifully. Maui our leading man, was funny and delightfully self-obsessed in the capable hands of actor Carter.
The show is narrated by a trio of ancestors. Annabelle, Skyla, and Miranda worked beautifully together and helped to maintain the pace and vibe of the production.
The actors playing Moana’s family and friends had genuine warmth and a sense of shared history. Well done to Leilani, who showed capable comedic skills as Gramma Tala, Gurshaan who had lovely or authority as Chief Tui and Alexandra, beautifully maternal as Sina. Moana’s besties Hei Hei and Pua were delightful in the hands of Ryder and Carine.
Giant crab Tamatoa was well played by Khalya with great help from Rachel and Sabina as the claws.
Simple but effective costuming gave this production a tropical feel and cohesive look – great work from Anna Muraszko and Tracy Littlefair.
Moana Jr. was a high-quality production that delighted its audience and highlighted a bucket load of developing talent. A joy to watch. Congratulations to Excelsior Primary for producing such fabulous work, you should feel very proud.
