Craig McLachlan Withdraws from Cluedo

Actor Craig McLachlan has withdrawn from the cast of Cluedo due to a social media backlash against him and the cast of the new production.

Crossroads Live announced last week that he would play the role of Colonel Mustard in a national tour.

Other actors and creatives in the production were reportedly unaware that he had been cast in the season.

In statement released today McLachlan said:

"Almost one week ago, a casting announcement was made regarding the Australian stage play Cluedo. In the hours and days that followed, I was targeted in a social media campaign from within the theatre community, which I was devastated to see has then impacted those involved in the production."

"I therefore feel that it is best for the production and those involved for me to withdraw."

Producer John Frost released a statement.

"Craig McLachlan’s theatrical stage return wasn’t well received by some of the industry and public. The resulting impact on others involved has prompted his withdrawal from the production. I have listened to the feedback and as producer, whilst it was my initial casting decision, I understand the opposing sentiment and I am sorry for any distress this decision has caused."

One of the actors who expressed shock at the intial casting was Queenie van der Zandt.

"To be clear, McLachlan was acquitted in criminal court in 2020 (of sexual assault). But the magistrate, Belinda Wallington, made a number of comments in her judgment that remain relevant. According to ABC News, she described the four complainants as “brave and honest witnesses,” and noted that under current consent laws, “the result may have been different.” She also said McLachlan may have acted from an “egotistical, self-entitled sense of humour” and believed consent existed even when that belief was unreasonable."
