Meet Manly's Barricade Boys

Meet Manly's Barricade Boys

Get to know the Boys of the Barricade in Manly Musical Society’s 10th Anniversary Production of Les Misérables, from 19 April until 28 April, 2019.

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables details the trials of France’s lower class and exemplifying the triumph of human spirit. Its uplifting message of hope, its grand epic tale and glorious music has made it the longest running musical of all time.

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century revolutionary France, Les Misérables tells the enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption. Ex-prisoner Jean Valjean is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

The ‘Boys of the Barricade’ - (pictured from top) Sam Hamilton, Reece Lyndon, Jonah K Samuel, Sean Langbridge, Tim Wotherspoon, Neville Bereyne, Bill Sunderland, Kirian Gupta, Matt Francis, Dylan Carlin and Mateo Morceo – replied to our Q & A. Photos by Rod Herbert

Your character is about to die on the Barricade in Les Misérables every night. If you knew you were going to die, how would you spend your final day?

Reece Lyndon: Driving an F1 car, watching a Broadway show, playing dress ups with my bubba.

Sam Hamilton: I would spend it with my friends and family around a piano

Neville Bereyne: I would run through a department store and just rip things off the shelf and run amock. Absolutely Fabulous style. Then I would get myself to the beach and drink champagne with family and friends and swim until the sun set.

Bill Sunderland: Telling all my castmates what I really think of them... that they're wonderful performers.

Sean Langbridge: Golf and surfing.

Kirian Gupta: I’m going to go with the boring answer, but I would spend the day with friends and family. I would listen to my favourite music and eat a lot of pasta and pizza.

Matt Francis: Rehearsing.

Dylan Carlin: I would spend my last day with my family having lots of fun and pretending like it wasn’t my last day alive.

Tim Wotherspoon: Spending the day in NYC watching as many Broadway shows as possible (my current record is four).

Jonah K Samuel: Surfing but I can't surf.

Mateo Morceo: Weeping with friends and family. Oh God why? Why am I dying? Dark question.

What would be your final supper choice?

Reece Lyndon: Fatty lamb cutlets with rosemary and lemon, Greek salad, sticky date pudding and vanilla ice cream. Chocolate thickshake chaser.

Sam Hamilton:  Pizza!

Neville Bereyne: Champagne, oysters and then a big Italian feast. Followed by Messina Gelato.

Bill Sunderland: Just a big bowl of whatever fatty, sauce covered pasta I can find.

Sean Langbridge:  Bottomless gnocchi.

Kirian Gupta: Definitely a Gorgonzola gnocchi - my absolute favourite!!

Matt Francis: Mum’s ravioli.

Dylan Carlin: Gnocchi Bolognese.

Tim Wotherspoon: Hawaiian pizza.

Jonah K Samuel: Pub Feed.

Mateo Morceo: Bread that is my body and wine that is my blood.

What is your favourite musical of all time?

Reece Lyndon: Has to be Les Mis, with Jesus Christ Superstar a close second.

Sam Hamilton:  The Secret Garden would probably be one of the musicals that’s nearest to my heart.

Neville Bereyne: The Phantom of the Opera.

Bill Sunderland: Musicals are all wonderful! The first I ever performed in was The Music Man, so it'll always have a soft spot in my heart.

Sean Langbridge:  Hamilton.

Kirian Gupta: Mamma Mia! (can I say Mamma Mia 2 - what an amazing movie-musical!)

Matt Francis: Les Mis of course.

Dylan Carlin: Wild Party. I absolutely love the swing and jazz style of the musical and how it blends so perfectly with vocals, and the choreography is intense.

Tim Wotherspoon: Hamilton (I have seen it too).

Jonah K Samuel: Sweeney Todd.

Mateo Morceo: They're all great in different ways. I guess Hamilton is the most recent juggernaut of my life.

Do you have a bucket list role?

Reece Lyndon: Jean Valjean

Sam Hamilton:  Evan Hansen. For sure.

Neville Bereyne:  Would love to be able to wear the mask and play the Phantom.

Bill Sunderland: Maybe a weird one, but the Russian singer during "To Life" in Fiddler. Such a lovely piece of music with a family connection, too.

Sean Langbridge:  Alexander Hamilton

Kirian Gupta: John Thomas in Miss Saigon.

Matt Francis: Callaghan in Legally Blonde.

Dylan Carlin: Judge Frollo, Sweeney Todd, Thernadier, any kind of villainous or dark role.

Tim Wotherspoon: I’ve been lucky enough to play a few already (Marius from Les Misérables, Tinman and Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz) but probably Eugene from Grease.

Jonah K Samuel: Sweeney Todd

Mateo Morceo: Alexander Hamilton. It's fire and passion.

Which gender bender role would you want to play?

Reece Lyndon: Madame Thenardier - she’s a lad deep down.

Sam Hamilton:  Eponine

Neville Bereyne: Hard one but either Eva Peron in Evita or Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd.

Bill Sunderland: Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.

Sean Langbridge:  Eponine.

Kirian Gupta: Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia!

Matt Francis: Madame Thenadier.

Dylan Carlin: Mrs Lovett, hands down. She is quite a character and I feel like playing her would be an absolute adventure.

Tim Wotherspoon: Muriel in Muriel’s Wedding.

Jonah K Samuel:  I would play Maria from The Sound of Music but I'd be Mario.

Mateo Morceo: Elphaba from Wicked. Massive songs and I get to ride a broomstick. Besides with all that green paint, I can pretend I'm the mask. Somebody stop me!!!
