Rockdale Opera Company Premieres New Australian Opera

Rockdale Opera Company is starting 2026 with the World Premiere of a brand new opera written by the company’s resident Musical Director, Dr Steven Stanke.

The Monk is a gothic chamber opera, based on the notorious 1796 novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis.

From its atmospheric opening scenes within the cloistered monastery to its seductive encounters, spectral visitations, and final harrowing downfall, The Monk conjures a world of mystery, passion, and moral peril. With its haunting music, intense drama, and shadowy gothic aesthetic, this bold new work promises an unforgettable journey into the depths of human frailty and forbidden desire.

It will be presented at Rockdale Town Hall, in a workshop performance for one night only, 28th February at 8pm. A pre-performance talk will be given by Steven, giving an insight into the genesis of his work.

The cast is made up of 5 of the company’s most regular and talented principals:

AMBROSIO (the Monk) - Daniel Verschuer
ROSARIO/MATILDA (a monk) - Elizabeth Cooper
ANTONIA (a young villager) -  Galatea Kneath
LEONELLA (Antonia’s aunt) - Camilla Wright
FATHER PABLOS (a monk) - Brett Crocker
