Tony Awards 2025

Tony Awards 2025

Australian Actress Sarah Snook and Costume Designer Marg Howell have each won a Tony Award for the play The Picture of Dorian Gray.

In her acceptance speech Snook said “This means so much for a little Australian girl to be here on Broadway… it is billed as a one person show, but I don’t feel alone on any night that I do this show. There are so may people on stage making it work, and so many people behind the stage making it work – in particular a huge thank you to [adapter and director] Kip Williams who is incredible to create this.”

Michael Cassel, producer of the Broadway production, said: “Sarah Snook’s Tony Award win is a deeply deserved honour. Her performance has captivated audiences night after night, and this recognition is a celebration of her extraordinary artistry. It is also a proud moment for our entire creative team, whose vision and talent have also been recognised tonight. From its beginnings in Sydney to standing ovations on the West End and Broadway, the journey of this show has been nothing short of phenomenal. This accolade is not only a testament to the brilliance of everyone involved, but also to the courage of Sydney Theatre Company and Kip Williams, whose creative genius, ambition and innovation made this groundbreaking piece of theatre possible. I am so proud to be a part of Australian theatre being shared on the global stage.”

All eyes are on Broadway where The Sydney Theatre Company/Michael Cassel Group  production of The Picture of Dorian Gray was up for a total of six Tony Award nominations (winning two) including one for Best Director Kip Williams who was pipped by the Director of Oh Mary in this category.

The production was nominated for Best Costume Design of a Play, Marg Horwell; Best Lighting Design of a Play, Nick Schlieper; Best Sound Design of a play, Clemence Williams and Best Scenic Design of a Play, Marg Horwell and David Bergman.

Maybe Happy Ending won six Tony awards including Best Musical.  MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the story of a chance encounter that sparks connection, adventure, and maybe even love. The musical, which is performed without intermission, follows two life-like helper-bots, Oliver and Claire, who discover each other in Seoul later in the 21st century and develop a connection that challenges what they believe is possible for themselves, exploring relationships, love and mortality.

Best Play was Purpose. The play is a family drama revealing the members of the politically prominent, black fictional Jasper family.

A big star to be nominated (but missed out) was George Clooney for Good Night, and Good Luck.
