This production stands out thanks to its electrifying performances, catchy songs, and mind-blowing special effects.

& Juliet

Music and lyrics by Max Martin and friends, book by David West Read. Presented by Northern Light Theatre Company. Shedley Theatre, Elizabeth SA. 3-18 October 2025

What if Juliet chose not to kill herself, deciding instead to live life in her own way? This is the premise of this jukebox musical that turns the original story of Romeo and Juliet on its head.

A Chorus Line

Conceived by Michael Bennett. Music by Marvin Hamlisch, Lyrics by Edward Kleban. Book by James Kirkwood Jr and Nicholas Dante. Produced by Free-Rain Theatre Company. Directed and choreographed by Michelle Heine. The Q: Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre. 30 September – 19 October 2025

Chosen to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this classic first hitting Broadway, Free-Rain’s latest production A Chorus Line is bursting with enthusiasm and aching with pathos. Though it’s not by any measure perfect, it’s wonderful to see these young people’s love of performance. More importantly, they capture all the ambition, snark, disappointment, resilience, pragmatism and compromises of the characters.

Not Without Right: Shakespeare's Secrets

By Colin Cox. Will & Company. Melbourne Fringe. Bard’s Apothecary. Sep 30 to Oct 18, 2025

William Shakespeare, the English playwright, poet and actor, was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. The son of a glove maker shunned his hereditary rights. Despite his lack of formal education and much to his parents’ dismay, he pursued his thespian dreams and moved to London to tread the boards and pen his musings into one hundred and forty sonnets and thirty-seven plays. He died at the age of fifty-two. One month prior he made a will, claiming he was in ‘im perfect health & memorie, god be prayed’.

YUMMY, Decadence: 10 Years of Yummy.

Presented by YUMMY Productions and James Welsby in association with Melbourne Fringe Festival. Directed by James Welsby in collaboration with the cast. Meat Market, 3 Blackwood Street, North Melbourne. 30 September – 18 October 2025.

Drag performer and producer Valerie Hex comperes and features in this smashing show. The audience needs to strap themselves in for quite a dazzling roller coaster ride of drag cabaret, burlesque, circus arts, acrobatics as well as live music. This show is unequivocally camp, highly unapologetic and provides an extremely celebratory space for queer, non-binary, trans, and culturally diverse performers. The mood is often satirical, impish, and taunting and the effect is always exhilarating and exciting.

The Natural Horse

Written by T. Adamson. Directed by Rebecca Day. Presented by Salad Days Collective for Brisbane Festival. PIP Theatre, 23 September - 4 October 2025

Stepping into PIP Theatre for Salad Days Collective’s The Natural Horse is like tumbling headfirst into a brilliantly bizarre daydream; one that’s equal parts absurd, funny, and unexpectedly touching. This Australian premiere of T. Adamson’s work is a great reminder of what makes independent theatre so thrilling: bold risks, inventive storytelling, and performers who throw themselves heart-first into the chaos.

work.txt

Written & directed by Nathan Ellis. SUBJECT OBJECT. Produced in Australia for SUBJECT OBJECT by Harry Dowling@subject_object_ Melbourne Fringe Festival, Common Rooms, Trades Hall. 30 September – 12 October 2025

The stage looks as if something was interrupted.  There are two microphones on stands, each with headphones; there’s a printer, and a jumbled pile of wooden blocks.  Above the stage there’s a large screen.  There are no actors.  We, the audience, are the actors, but the text (questions and instructions) is supplied – and it begins on the big screen...

The Moon’s Awake

By Catherine McKernan Doris. Directed by Katherine Shield. Townsville Little Theatre, Denise Glasgow Performing Arts Centre, Pimlico State High School, Townsville. 1 – 5 October 2025.

THIS PLAY is a triumph of local writing.

It has been a pleasure to see Townsville-based playwright, Catherine McKernan Doris, develop and hone her skills through this play. I have seen it develop from its initial written form, workshopped through two years of Townsville’s annual TheatreiNQ Playground Writer’s Festival to finally be staged.
