The Doll Trilogy: Kid Stakes, Other Times, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll

By Ray Lawler. Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre, Melbourne. 10 February – 11 April 2026

Cane cutter mates Roo (Ben Prendergast) and Barney (John Leary) come down from Queensland in the off season – or ‘layoff’.  By chance, they run into a couple of girls – Olive (Ngaire Dawn Fair) and Nancy (Emily Goddard) – at the aquarium and end up as boarders and more at the Carlton boarding house run by Olive’s mother Emma (Caroline Lee).

Hissterier

By Amelia and Kailyn. The Blue Room and Fringe World. Feb 3-7, 2026

The Fringe World guide tells me that Hissterier asks "What does it mean to be classified as ‘crazy’?” This is a piece, that dabbles with craziness, is definitely not linear, and leaves more questions than it answers.

A Mirror

By Sam Holcroft. Belvoir Street Theatre, Upstairs Theatre. 21 Feb to 22 Mar, 2026

What’s creepy about the world of this new British play, where all cultural and political works are reforged into nationalist messages to help drive soldiers to the frontline, is that it’s so apparent now in so many countries. And yet authoritarians, like Putin and Trump, and weak popularists have long known that controlling culture and storytelling is vital to controlling their people.

The Debate

By Martha Lott. Adelaide Fringe. The Arch at Holden Street Theatres. Fri 27 Feb- Sun 22 Mar, 2026

Noël Coward famously sang, ‘Don’t Put Your Daughter on the Stage’, but this, of course does not apply when you are a member of Ade

Dizney Debauched (Bad Guys)

Ardent Artiste Productions. Adelaide Fringe. The Lab at Fools Paradise. Victoria Square, Adelaide. Feb 25 – March 1, 2026

‘Burlesque is an art form known for parody, satire, and, in its popular iteration, suggestive, teasing striptease. It originated as a form of caricature mocking serious subjects, literature, or social norms, often combining bawdy humour with elaborate costumes.’

Ardent Artiste Productions are to be congratulated for their inclusivity of age, sexual orientation and mobility.

Dizney Debauched brings us a collection of our favourite Disney bad guys (or should I say bad girls) and adds their own touch of burlesque.

& Juliet

Music and Lyrics by Max Martin & Friends. Book by David West Read, Produced by Ballarat Lyric Theatre. Directed by Braydon McKinnon. Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat. 26th Feb - 8th March, 2026.

Take a much-loved Shakespeare play, turn it on its head, add a score of impeccable jukebox tunes, and put it in the hands of an exemplary super-talented cast, and you have Ballarat Lyric Theatre’s latest triumph.

I have reviewed more than 2,000 shows - Main stage, Indie, Arena, Community - and my respect for Community Theatre just gets greater with every production I see. Ballarat Lyric clearly has a deep commitment to the pursuit of excellence, and it shows on every level.

But let’s start with the show itself.

The Other Side of Me

By Gary Lang NT Dance Company. Produced by BlakDance, Cremorne Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). 27-28 February 2026

Art has always been able to express human truths that are otherwise too painful to talk about. And so it is with the Stolen Generation and Aboriginal deaths in custody – deeply intertwined DNA strands of Australian history that are so painful, surreal and vile that it is difficult to know where to start. Gary Lang – Larrakia man, dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director from NT Dance Company (Indigenous-owned dance company from the Northern Territory) – believes that truth telling is the way to create a pathway to healing.

Opera for the Dead

By Mindy Meng Wang and Monica Lim. Arts House, Melbourne. February 26 – Mar 1, 2026

Opera for the Dead is a hybrid cyber opera about life, death and memory created by award winning composer and Guzeng artist Mindy Meng Wang and sound technologist and composer Monica Lim. The show has performed at Asia TOPA, OzAsia festival and the Sydney festival and now Arts House in Melbourne.

Opera for the Dead is a beautiful immersive show that awakens your aural and visual senses. It takes you on a mysterious journey into the unknown while it challenges your own belief system on death, burial and ritual.

Faraway

Australian Dance Theatre. Adelaide Festival 2026. Odeon Theatre, The Parade Norwood. Feb 25 – March 1, 2026

Faraway is an hour in a realm that is far removed from our everyday lives, an empty dark stage relieved only with ropes tied to look like vines hanging from the ceiling. A sign that we are going to experience a unique theatre experience.

As the director and choreographer Jenni Large succinctly explains -

Le Nor (The Rain)

By Adriane Daff, Arielle Gray, Chris Isaacs and Tim Watts. The Last Great Hunt / Perth Festival. Directed by Diane Daff, Matt Edgerton and Tim Watts. Heath Ledger Theatre, State Theatre Centre of WA. Feb 25-28, 2026

First commissioned in 2019, The Last Great Hunt’s Le Nor returns to Perth Festival to be seen by a larger audience. Conceptually very exciting Le Nor (The Rain) recreates a foreign film live on stage, every night.
