Nickyboy & Queen Fee: Fiona O’Loughlin

Nickyboy & Queen Fee: Fiona O’Loughlin
Top of the Ark (Arkaba Hotel). Adelaide Fringe Festival 2023. Thurs 2nd March, 2023

With two comics hitting the stage, there was bound to be chaos and just a few belly laughs. Honest and raw humour, with the odd expletives and a karaoke mix, the rowdy audience were showered with two hours of unique storytelling. This comedy duo goes way back and clearly have an affection for each-other. This performance was all about fun and yarns.

Loveable larrikin Nickyboy has been revving up audiences for over 10 years. Having earnt his own fan base, his natural talent reels you in. His masterful storytelling captures your attention and when you least expect it, he leaves you doubled over with the punch lines. If you are expecting to see a lonely comic followed by a spotlight, then you will be pleasantly surprised to find he is so much more than that. Not afraid to play the clown, he sings and dances for his supper. He has clearly mastered his craft.

I must confess that I have been a fan of comedian Fiona O’Loughlin for many years. I had read her wildly popular book, ‘Truths from and Unreliable Witness’, so I had no illusions about what she had endured to be making a comeback of sorts, to the audience she so clearly adores. Making her way to the stage to a soundtrack from the 80s, she looked fabulous in her vintage garb and platinum blonde locks. Her voice is undeniable and as raw as her storytelling. Masterful in the way she juggles many narratives; have no fear as she will tidy them all up with a mischievous grin. Brutally honest about her challenges, she has found a way to laugh about the chaos that has been her life and not take herself too seriously. Admitting to the crowd that she is living with early dementia and an ADHD diagnosis, she cackles at the idea that none of her mistakes were her fault. This fan favourite is as real and authentic as any comic I have ever seen and although she is nearly 60 in age, I don’t think she will be slowing down anytime soon.
