Already some companies across Australia are promising dress-up performances reminiscent of popular late-night movie screenings over the last five decades.

The Rocky Horror Show has been around for 50 years, but professional revivals have been so frequent that it’s never previously been released for amateur productions. Now, in 2026 it’s a hot new pick on the community theatre circuit, as companies line up to do ‘The Time Warp’.

Rockdale Opera Company Premieres New Australian Opera

Rockdale Opera Company is starting 2026 with the World Premiere of a brand new opera written by the company’s resident Musical Director, Dr Steven Stanke.

The Monk is a gothic chamber opera, based on the notorious 1796 novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis.

Calendar Girls at Lane Cove Theatre Company

Calendar Girls by Tim Firth, a witty and heartwarming story of friendship, determination and a cheeky nude calendar, opens at the Pottery Lane Performance Space on 20 February 2026.

Set in the rolling hills of Yorkshire, Calendar Girls tells the story of a group of ordinary women who, in the face of grief, do something extraordinary.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at Cronulla

The first production for 2026 at Arts Theatre Cronulla is Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang. The play premiered in New Jersey in 2012, and transferred to Broadway, where it won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2013. It is a comedy about the relationships of three single middle-aged siblings, Vanya, Sonia and Masha and her new toy boy, Spike.  

GSOV to Stage Edwardian Musical Hit, The Arcadians

The Arcadians (music by Lionel Monckton and Howard Talbot, lyrics by Arthur Wimperis and new book by Melvyn Morrow) has been hailed as the Edwardian era’s most successful Musical Comedy and the My Fair Lady of its day!

Gaslighting Arts Theatre Cronulla

The final play at Arts Theatre Cronulla for 2025 is a classic Victorian thriller. Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight was written in 1938 but is set in the later part of the 19th century. The play, and the films based on it, inspired the term ‘gaslighting’, widely in use today. Employed by a perpetrator as a tactic to distort reality to maintain control, the term describes emotional abuse that causes the victim to question their sanity.
